The Recreation & Sport Studies Baccalaureate Degree in the School of Recreation, Sport and Exercise Science at Shepherd University focuses on the management of Recreation and Sport Professions. The curriculum consists of core courses that prepare students for a variety of careers in the recreation/sport field. Within this program are seven (7) specializations: Sport Communication; Sport and Event Management; Sport Marketing; Therapeutic Recreation; Sport Communications; and Intercollegiate Athletic Administration & Coaching.

COAPRT Standard 7.01. - Students graduating from the program shall demonstrate the following entry-level knowledge: a) the nature and scope of the relevant park, recreation, tourism or related professions and their associated industries; b) techniques and processes used by professionals and workers in these industries; and c) the foundation of the profession in history, science and philosophy.
  • Outcome:
    Program Objective #1: Students shall demonstrate entry-level knowledge of the histories, philosophies, and various professions associated with Recreation and Leisure.

  • Assessment Method:
    Students to complete their philosophy of the Management of Recreation/Leisure.
  • Result:
    Students assessed at “acceptable” (80% or higher): Fall, 2022 - 88%; Spring, 2023 - 100%; Fall, 2023 - 100%
COAPRT Standard 7.02. - Students graduating from the program shall be able to demonstrate the ability to design, implement, and evaluate services that facilitate targeted human experiences and that embrace personal and cultural dimensions of diversity.
  • Outcome:
    Program Outcome #3: Students will demonstrate an understanding of the concepts of inclusion and diversity in the recreation, leisure, and sport industry.

  • Assessment Method:
    Personal reflection paper - students are required to prepare a report focused on a situation, event, or incident that they were involved in directly or that they have witnessed that involved inequities or injustices in recreation or sport.
  • Result:
    Students assessed at "acceptable" (80% or higher): Spring, 2023 - 95%; Summer 2023 - 100%
COAPRT Standard 7.03. - Students graduating from the program shall be able to demonstrate entry-level knowledge about operations and strategic management/administration in parks, recreation, tourism and/or related professions..
  • Outcome:
    Program Objective #5: Students will demonstrate an understanding of programmatic and facility management/ administration in recreation, leisure, and sport.

  • Assessment Method:
    Mid & Final Evaluation – RECR 450 (Internship) Intern supervisor to evaluate intern’s ability to demonstrate learned programming and management skills using an evaluation tool after the internship.

    Students assessed at “acceptable” (80% or higher): Spring, 2022 - 56%; Summer, 2022 - 100%; Fall, 2022 - 44%; Spring, 2023 - 83%; Summer, 2023 - 100%; Fall, 2023 - 66%
