The Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management (PRTM) at Clemson began in 1966 as the Department of Recreation and Park Administration in the College of Education. In 1970, the Department became part of the newly created College of Forest and Recreation Resources. In 1997, the Department became part of the College of Health, Education, and Human Development. In 2016, as a result of an academic reorganization, PRTM joined the College of Behavioral, Social and Health Sciences. The core accredited program is the undergraduate program and the shared core curriculum. Undergraduate PRTM students share a common core curriculum and then choose one of two concentration areas: Parks, Recreation and Tourism (PRT) concentration which includes emphasis area choices of Community Recreation and Sport Management (CRSM); Parks, Conservation and Outdoor Recreation (PCOR); and Travel and Event Management (TEM), or the Recreational Therapy concentration.

COAPRT Standard 7.01. - Students graduating from the program shall demonstrate the following entry-level knowledge: a) the nature and scope of the relevant park, recreation, tourism or related professions and their associated industries; b) techniques and processes used by professionals and workers in these industries; and c) the foundation of the profession in history, science and philosophy.

  • Assessment Method:
    Combination of Professional Path Assignment and Foundation Test series. These assignments were located in PRTM 2200 Conceptual Foundations of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management.
  • Result:
    87% of students achieved a score of 70% or better on the Professional Path assignment (target not met). 91% of students achieving a score of 70% or better on the Foundation Test Series that covers the foundation of the PRTM profession in history, science, and philosophy (target met).
COAPRT Standard 7.02. - Students graduating from the program shall be able to demonstrate the ability to design, implement, and evaluate services that facilitate targeted human experiences and that embrace personal and cultural dimensions of diversity.

  • Assessment Method:
    Comprehensive program planning project with distinct planning, implementation, and evaluation portions graded by a scoring sheet for each section. This assignment was located in PRTM 2220 Program and Event Planning in Parks, Recreation and Tourism.
  • Result:
    84% of students achieved a score of 70% or better on the PLAN portion of the comprehensive program project (target not met). 99% of students achieved a score of 70% or better on the IMPLEMENTATION portion of the comprehensive program project (target met). 82% of students will achieve a score of 70% or better on the EVALUATION portion of the comprehensive program project (target not met). *In the 2022-2023 academic year, all 7.02 series standards were brought back into PRTM 2220 (no longer measures in PRTM 3260). **In 2023-2024, we are reevaluating how we are preparing students for the planning portion of the program project and the evaluation portion of the program project. In regard to the evaluation portion of the assignment, we have created increased expectations for the analysis of the data they receive from the survey following their program implementation.

  • Assessment Method:
    Administrative case study, objective exam, and written essay exam. These assignments were located in PRTM 2200 Conceptual Foundations of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management and PRTM 2260 Foundations of Management and Administration in Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management (with PRTM 2261 Lab).
  • Result:
    90% of students achieved a score of 70% or better on the capstone agency case study (target met). In Fall 2022, the management and administration content was assessed as the final Objective Exam, and 85% of students achieved a score of 70% or better on the final exam (target not met). In Spring 2023 and Summer 2023, the management and administration content was assessed as a two test, test series, and 91% of students achieved an average score of 70% or better on this test series (target met). 86% of the students scored 70 or better on the essay exam (target not met).
